This is the first of many blogs I will be writing this season covering all things Bronco Football related.
The Mountain West just announced that it will not extend an invitation to Boise State. But yes, BSU to the MWC absolutely remains on the table, pending the immediate outcome of Pac-10 expansion and the future of the Big 12.
Today, at their annual meetings in Jackson, Wyoming, the presidents of the Mountain West Conference voted not to extend an invitation to Boise State at this time. The decision is not final, and that the board may reconsider after the other conferences have made their moves.
MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson said “After an in-depth review of our membership, we think that due to the uncertainty in the intercollegiate landscape and the potential for significant shifts potentially in the immediate future, the board did not make a decision to expand at the present time...The Mountain West will continue to monitor developments ... and prepare for potential scenarios." The conference is waiting for the Big Ten, Pac-10 and Big 12 dust to settle to see who's left not sitting in a chair once the music stops.
Bronco fans have been hoping the team could join the Mountain West and leave the Western Athletic Conference, a league the Broncos have dominated for a decade in football. The Broncos have enjoyed success against the Mountain West Conference, losing only to TCU in the 2009 Poinsettia Bowl, 17-16.
"The most appropriate action at this juncture is to wait and see how the variables unfold," Boise State President Bob Kustra said in a statement. "The opportunity has not been lost."
Head coach Chris Petersen said the decision doesn't change anything about his plans for next season. "We have a very challenging non-conference and conference schedule ahead of us and we are not planning to change our goals because of today's decision," he said.
It makes sense for the Mountain West to wait and see what happens. If the Big 12 does break apart, the remaining schools could seek a partnership with the Mountain West. A league with Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and either Baylor or Colorado would be very beneficial to the conference.
